Description
The passive voice in French is used when the focus is on the action or the object receiving the action, rather than on the person performing it. It is formed with the verb être (to be) followed by the past participle, which agrees in gender and number with the subject. The person who performs the action can be introduced with par (by), but it is often omitted. The passive voice is commonly used in formal writing, news reports, and when the doer of the action is unknown or less important.
